Question by : Do some auctions (or Car Max) rollback the odometer?
I know it is illegal, but I found a 2003 VW Jetta with only 35K miles.
It seems impossible. Also the car is Salvaged.
How can I check whether the miles were changed?

Why would that be impossible?

Most people know not to “roll back” the mileage. They will roll it forward. It is also possible that the odometer has been replaced on the VW.

Rolling a car’s odometer back is a practice of the past. It’s not worth it anymore and the newer odometers make it very difficult to do so.
The odometer would be the least of my worries. Since it’s a salvaged vehicle (which tells me that CarMax isn’t selling it), this means the company that once insured it felt there was enough damage to “total” the car, and it has been rebuilt. I don’t care how many miles are on it, that should be enough to send up many red flags. If you insist on purchasing this car, make sure you take it to a licensed mechanic and have them check it over thoroughly. Might cost you $ 50-100, but it’ll be worth every penny. You never know, the frame might have been rebuilt, there might be welds everywhere that the common everyday consumer might not spot… worth it to find out beforehand.
