How can I register a car bought without title in a salvage yard?

I live in Tennessee and I am considering buying a 1968 VW beetle out of a salvage yard without title. I have heard that I can get a salvage title for it with the bill of sale from the salvage yard, but can I register it to drive with that or what do I have to do to get it legally on the road. Is there a way to get a rebuilt title or something?

Go to, or call, you local drivers license bureau and they will tell you the steps on how to get a title

you have to apply to the state for a lost title

you will have to have the car inspected by the highway patrole and the go to the DMV and show you had it sighned off by the HP’s and then they well inspect it and your on your way.

Could be really tricky, I had similar experience building my kit car, volkswagen frame, luckily still had the title. In Washington state, once a vehicle goes to salvage, and loses it’s title, it is dead and gone. You can only re title if you make it a recreational vehicle. Off road and such.

You should check with your local motor vehicle department. Many states have a salvage title that is good for vehicle registration, however the cost of a salvage title might make it unfeasible.

In Canada you can apply for a deed of a car as long as you have a receipt from the seller saying that you bought it and it has to have the VIN on the receipt. The Motor Vehicle branch will make you up a new one if you have all the info that is needed for the deed

Go to you motor vehicles department and request a salvage title for this beetle. Give them the VIN, and you’ll have to have proof that the brakes and lights work (lights need to be properly adjusted). You need to check on all accidents this auto has been involved in. This will tell you exactly what all is wrong with it; the type of damage it has had. Do a vehicle search online regarding accidents on that car. If you don’t know how to do that, ask Tennessee’s MV Department for the site, or ask your insurance carrier to do this favor for you, since you’ll be needing insurance on it, once you purchase it.

Call your Department of Motor Vehicles Car licensing and registration division. They will title you or tell you how to go about it. Take your bill of sale so they can tax your ride and put licence plates on it to. Got insurance card they will ask. P.S. the vin number is stamped under the back seat on the back bone by the oval shift linkage cover.
